Background, Community Involvement + Interests
A Santa Barbara local since 1976, Cara has been committed to and involved in her hometown for decades. She spent nine years as a local public high school teacher at her alma mater, San Marcos High School. Cara has developed extensive local and regional contacts and a network through family, friends, and professional relationships during her almost 50 years as a Santa Barbara resident. As a life-long athlete, Cara is proud to support local high school, collegiate, and amateur athletics as well as events and non-profits. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table for almost two decades, serving as the organization’s President in 2015-17. She has also served on the race committee for Santa Barbara’s premiere ocean-swimming series, Reef and Run, since its inception.
Education
Cara is an alumna of local schools, Vieja Valley Elementary, La Colina Junior High, and San Marcos High School (Class of 1990). She is a second-generation Trojan, graduating cum laude from the University of Southern California (B.A. Journalism and Public Relations, 1994) and completing her California Single-Subject Teaching Credential in English at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1997.

Cara’s active lifestyle allows her to enjoy and share all of the beauty of Santa Barbara. Ocean swims, mountain hikes, long bike rides, restaurants for all occasions, cheerful festivals, excellent entertainment, art and culture, non-profit and community involvement, these are just a few of the ways Cara stays connected to her hometown and the people that make it special.
Cara's family and community ties run deep in Santa Barbara. Her parents built their home here, where they still live in 1978. Her late father, Frank, was a widely respected local physician, and her mother, Jacque, is active throughout the community. Her siblings are all local: Paul, a partner with Radius Commercial Real Estate, Marc, a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch, and Jennifer, a medical sales executive. She is also an aunt to eight beautiful nieces and nephews. Cara’s husband, Shayne Taylor, also a long-time local, works alongside his father at Robert Taylor and Associates, General Contractor, building and renovating some of the finest homes in our area.
According to Cara, it is truly a privilege to live in Santa Barbara. She relishes any chance she has to share the beauty, character, charm, and culture of her hometown with friends, family, and visitors. She understands the power of treating others like family.
